“Masala”…with its subtle presentation and simple story sends across a very inspiring and a highly positive message…i mean messages like:

Tough times never last but tough people do…!

Try and try but don’t cry…!

God helps them, those who help themselves…!

Where there is a will…there is a way…!

Behind every successful man there is a woman…!

Goodness is the only investment that never fails…!

Everything happens for good…!

The entire movie is about Revan (Girish Kulkarni) and Sarika (Amruta Subhash) and their struggle for survival till they eventually become successful entrepreneurs. Though this story sends across a strong message, but it is not conveyed through any of the philosophical dialogues or melodramatic scenes or teary sequences. This is done through a very simple story, brilliant camera work and soothing background music. Though the start of the movie is not that impressive, but as the story unfolds, then it becomes really interesting and engaging.

This is a story about a man and his wife, who are struggling for their livelihood as they cannot succeed in any of the ventures that they invest into. This is not because they are not doing a fair job, but this is because of their kind heartedness with which they do the business. Just to give this example, writer has depicted two incidents, which conveys clearly that Revan is not capable of telling a lie to his customers (saree business) or he cannot do the recovery of the credit that he has given to his customers, because they (customers) themselves are in some other hardships ( grocery store business). But because of this soft ways of doing the business, he himself would always land into trouble as he then could not further clear the credit that he has received from his creditors. Just to save face, he and Sarika would then change city and would try some new business in the new city and after failing there, would again land into some other city doing some new business.

During their journey, they accidently land into Solapur and Sarika meets his distant cousin brother Kalyan (Hrishikesh Joshi). This is where they .i.e. Kalyan & his wife (Sneha Majgaonkar) and Revan & Sarika decides to do a small business of spicy groundnuts. They kick start their business with a bang and ends up with a loss again. But the story takes a positive turn when Revan is wrongly arrested and is then rescued by the local businessman and his wife (Mohan Aghashe and Jyoti Subhash). What happens after that is a real fun and inspiration to watch.

What I liked about this movie was the innocence with which Girish Kulkarni has played this role(the scene where Revan proposes Sarika is very beautiful). Similarly Amruta Subhash has also done her job of being a strong support to her husband, very well. Surprise packet was Hrishikesh Joshi, who has amazingly enacted a typical solapuri youth, with all the accurate solapuri accents and mannerisms. Mastach..! Mohan Aghashe, Jyoti Subhash, Shriram Lagoo were all at their best. Kishore Chowgule (Comedy Express fame) has just done one scene, but he leaves his mark and you remember him for that.

I would like to make a special mention of Dilip Prabavalkar for his part. The lessons that Girish Kulkarni learns from Dilip Prabhavalkar are really amazing. Dilip Prabhavalkar has played a scientist in this movie, who is constantly doing some research and failing in it. But his only inspiration from his innumerable failures is that, from every failure he learns something and according to him that’s what ONLY matters.

I think this is a very well made inspirational movie which is presented in a very simple yet impactful manner. I can still not forget the scene at last, when Revan and Sarika tries to find a connect in all the events of their life and eventually they lead to the same conclusion of starting a new venture of spices. That scene is so good, that it again asks us all to believe that everything in life happens for some reason and that reason is mostly good. The only thing is we should be able to derive that reason and meaning behind it and act accordingly.

Without saying anything further, I would just recommend everyone to taste this ultimate MASALA once…!

P.S: While watching this movie you will also certainly remember many of your friends or relatives who have gone through the similar path and have ultimately become successful entrepreneurs.
